Indigenous martial arts in Karnataka: Growth and opinions of martial artists towards decline

ABSTRACT:
India is a cultural heritage country. In which many youths involve in playing martial arts. In Karnataka many martial arts like wrestling vajramustikalaga, kattivarase, mallakamb, kombuvarase and donnevarse were very regular at ancient time. But now a day’s many of the youths attracted by modern activities and western games like cricket, volleyball, basketball, tennis etc and are not interested to involving in the indigenous martial arts activities. As the research is related to Karnataka state, it is delimited to Bangalore, Mysore, Belagavi, Bijapur, Bagalakot, Kalburgi, Ramanagar, Chitradurga and other regions of Karnataka. Simple random technique was used to select the martial artists. 230 martial artists were selected from various forms of martial arts. The questionnaires prepared by the researcher in consultation with the guide were used to collect the data from the martial artists. The percentile statistics was used by preparing frequency table and histogram reprentataion. The martial artists were having the opinions that martial arts should be included in the school and college curriculum and proper encouragement should be given by conducting competitions at various levels.
