ABSTRACT:
Coordinative abilities and respiratory efficiency are fundamental to effective motor performance. Adequate development of balance and movement differentiation supports skill acquisition, movement economy, and long-term participation in physical activity. This comparative study investigated the effects of yoga training, gymnastics training, and a sedentary lifestyle on selected coordinative abilities and breath-holding capacity among adolescent boys. Sixty school-going boys aged 14-17 years were equally divided into yoga, gymnastics, and sedentary groups. Differentiation ability, balance ability, and breath-holding capacity were assessed using one-way ANOVA. The results showed a significant difference in differentiation ability among groups, with the gymnastics group recording the highest mean score (8.55±2.19), followed by the sedentary (7.10±2.10) and yoga groups (6.50 ± 1.85). Balance ability differed significantly for both right leg and left leg (p<0.05), with the gymnastics and yoga groups outperforming the sedentary group (right: Breath-holding capacity also showed a significant group effect (p<0.05), with the yoga group demonstrating the highest mean value, followed by the gymnastics and sedentary groups. These findings indicate that gymnastics training is more effective for enhancing differentiation ability, yoga training provides superior improvements in respiratory control, and both training modalities significantly enhance balance compared to sedentary behaviour during adolescence.
