Yoga as a Tool for Cultural Reconnection and Healing

AUTHOR(S): Prem Sukh
ABSTRACT:
Yoga, an ancient practice rooted in Indian philosophy and spirituality, has transcended its origins to become a global phenomenon. This research explores the role of yoga as a tool for cultural reconnection and healing, particularly in contexts where individuals or communities seek to restore their cultural identity and address emotional, mental, and physical imbalances. The objectives of this study are threefold: (1) To examine how yoga serves as a bridge for diasporic communities to reconnect with their cultural heritage, (2) To analyse its therapeutic applications in promoting mental and emotional healing, and (3) To investigate its role in fostering intercultural understanding and global solidarity. A mixed-methods approach is employed, combining qualitative interviews with yoga practitioners, instructors, and cultural historians, alongside quantitative analysis of psychological and physiological outcomes in individuals who integrate yoga into their lives. Case studies of marginalized and displaced communities are also included to highlight the cultural and healing dimensions of yoga in diverse settings. The findings of this research reveal that yoga acts as a powerful medium for cultural preservation and revitalization, helping individuals rediscover their roots while promoting holistic well-being. Furthermore, yoga's adaptability allows it to transcend cultural boundaries, making it a universal tool for fostering unity and empathy. This study underscores the importance of integrating yoga into cultural and therapeutic initiatives, offering valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and mental health professionals seeking sustainable solutions for cultural and emotional healing.
