Background: Uterine fibroid is a prevalent gynaecological disorder of women's reproductive life, which is characterized by profuse mensural bleeding with abdominal pain. Despite the effective conventional treatment, people seek increased interest in non-pharmacological interventions like yoga. This case study aims to explore the impact of yoga on women with uterine fibroids.
Case details:A 43-year-old married woman reported excessive menstrual bleeding and severe abdominal bleeding during menstruation for three years. This intervention was a tailored yoga regimen for a three-month program divided into the first phase focused on gentle asanas and pranayama and the second phase focused on ten rounds of Suryanamaskar and pawanmuktasana 2 and 3 series followed by Shavasana for each asana. The duration was one hour once a day for five days a week over 3 months.
Result: The patient's pre-assessment revealed a bulky uterus and fibroid in the posterior myometrium. After a three-month yogic practice, the uterus reduced to 96.9 x 57.5 x 48.6 mm, the endometrium appeared normal, and the fibroid size decreased to 32.8 x 24.0 mm. The patient experienced weight loss from 88 to 79 kg.
Conclusion: Yoga can notably improve uterine fibroid management, reducing size, normalizing mensuration, weight loss, and stress, offering holistic therapeutic options for women with fibroids and promising potential for obstetrics and gynecological management.
